Original Wasco County Courthouse
410 W. Second Place
The Dalles, Oregon 97058
The Original Wasco County Courthouse hosts its annual series of regional history forums beginning Saturday, Feb. 4.
Programs begin at 1:30 p.m. in the upstairs courtroom of the 1859 courthouse, 410 W. Second Place in The Dalles, behind The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce.
Saturday, Feb. 4: The Making of ‘Win-Quatt, a Brief History of The Dalles, Oregon’.
Long-time friends Widge Johnson and Carolyn Wood co-edited the recently-released local history written by the late Philip and Linda Klindt. They will discuss “the good, the bad and the ugly” in regard to editing someone else’s work, and talk about their personal journeys as they completed this historical contribution.
Saturday, Feb. 11: Railroad Stories along the Deschutes River. Local railroad historian Jerry Tanquist shares stories and photos of the two rail-roads built up the river in 1909-1911. He tells tales of ten tunnels, cabooses, going fishing by train, shipping sheep, the Lady Frances Mine, The Deschutes Club domain, and the current status of abandoned sections of the Oregon Trunk Line.
Saturday, Feb. 18: Oregon and the Civil War: Politics and the Military. The Dalles native and retired educator in Dallas, Ore., Steve Betschart is president of the Northwest Civil War Council and engages in reenactments. He will trace military-political developments in Oregon in the 1850s and ‘60s and display items used by common soldiers from Oregon including an 1861 Springfield rifle.
Saturday, Feb. 25: Col. Wright’s Campaign as Mapped by Topographer T. Kolecki. After a career in health sciences, Dr. Mahlon Kriebel retired to Garfield, WA. He became interested in the ill-fated Col. Steptoe-Chief Vincent Battle and Wright’s subsequent campaign of 1858 from Ft. Dalles to Cataldo. Original letters, field notes, and the maps made by Theodore Kolecki, topographer during the Wright campaign, shed new light on military operations that originated in The Dalles.
Coffee and cookies will be served. The event is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome. Consider becoming a member. |
